Sunset over Pipes Canyon Mojave desert 2001

45.6 x 78 cm

At almost 11,000 feet, Mt San Jacinto rises above the sleeping Indian at Pipes Canyon in the Mojave desert, southwestern California.Still capped with snow during March and seen from 4,520 feet. This high desert country affords an abundance of Yucca and Joshua trees which are found nowhere else in the United States. Pure soft groundwater maintained the Serrano, Chemehuevi and Shoshonean People until the mid 19th century when gold prospectors and finally Europeans settlers moved into the area.
